French Film Review: Hors Normes Directed by Olivier Nakache & Éric Toledano

A feel-good movie with a tough subject at its heart, Hors Normes follows Jew Bruno (Vincent Cassel) and Muslim Malik (Reda Kateb), who combine efforts to help children with severe autism who have been rejected by other institutions as too difficult to look after.

It is based on the true story of Stéphane Benhamou and Daoud Tatou, who met as young summer camp counsellors before going on to found their own associations to work with autistic children. All their good work is threatened, however, when a government inspection of their unorthodox methods sees both associations facing possible closure. Erring on the right side of sentimentality, you will smile and you will shed a tear. A guaranteed cockle-warmer.

Directors: Olivier Nakache & Éric Toledano
Starring: Vincent Cassel, Reda Kateb
