The 70th edition of The Festival d’Avignon celebrates contemporary performing arts, bringing 18 days of artist performances to Avignon. Since its beginnings in 1947 by Jean Vilar, Avignon is transformed every July into a living city-theater, its historic architecture and performance venues host events and welcome tens of thousands of theater-lovers.
The heart of the festival is in the legendary space the “Cour d’honneur” (main courtyard) of the Popes’ Palace. The courtyard welcomes over 2,000 spectators on summer nights, for it’s evening outdoor performance. The inclusive festival brings international creations to the general public, giving everyone open and abundant access to contemporary culture.
The festival will see over thirty different shows performed over the course of a month, 70 films will be screened in tribute the the 70th anniversary, churches, parks, theaters and museums will host readings, exhibitions, films and debates, creating a fully immersive experience.
