Equisheim

Equisheim is an absolutely stunning place to visit; I have mentioned this to a few friends and family over the years and no one has heard of it. I find this astounding that such a stunning place is relatively unknown, so I would put this at the top of our list as the top hidden gem in France. Equisheim is already a member of “the most beautiful villages in France”– utterly picturesque.

Equisheim is located in the heart of the Alsace region where it has beautiful vineyards, colourful buildings with gorgeously paved streets. Don’t miss the central square’s amazing fountain and– last but not least– the infamous Equisheim castle.

If you are planning on taking a road trip and visiting this place renowned for its wine centuries-old cellars, you must stop to try the exceptional wines.

There are plenty of places to stay and there are around 5 campsites in that area to pitch your motorhome for only a few euros.

Conques

Another hidden gem is the French medieval village of Conques which was voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is located in the Occitanie region which sits between the River Dourdou and the River Ouche.

The beautifully cobbled streets and wonky buildings were filmed and mirrored for the blockbuster movie “Beauty and the Beast;” the film studio recreated it as the film set for Belle’s hometown.

You can head out of Conques to the bottom of Porte du Barry and visit the Roman bridge. Continue along and climb towards the Chapelle Sainte-Foy and you will be presented with a stunning view of Conques. In a famous tradition, every pilgrim that rings the bell may be lucky enough to hear the reply from the monks in Conques.

So if you decide to visit this place then be sure to give it a whirl down to the bridge. There are plenty of places to pitch up your motorhome and the prices are very reasonable.

Menton

Another great medieval town makes the list. This beautiful, sleepy town at the tip of the Cote d’Azur offers everything for a great travel experience: gorgeous beaches, amazing architecture in the Old Town, a wide variety of great food. It makes it hard to believe this town does not get the mention it deserves, compared to other destinations along the French Riviera. It may not have a party atmosphere but the beauty of the place speaks louder than words.

There are many things to do in and around Menton such as visiting the Jean Cocteau Museum, the tranquil gardens of Serre de la Madone or the Catholic church Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange.

There are a whole range of places to pitch up your motorhome.

Limousin

The wilderness of Limousin is a very sparsely populated region in south-central France but its raw beauty is well worth a visit if you want to see the central mountains with beautiful forests and lakes.

Limousin is bordered by Centre-Val de Loire, Auvergne, the Midi-Pyrénées, Aquitaine and Poitou-Charentes which forms part of the larger region Occitanie.

A great place to see is Lake Vassivière which is one of the largest artificial lakes in France, in the north of the Regional Nature Park of Millevaches. It boasts 1000 acres of fresh water with its own sandy beaches, campervan accommodation for your motorhome and plenty of watersports to entertain the whole family. There are some great spots to have a picnic, a barbecue or just sit and relax and watch the world go by. Prices in this region are very cheap and I would highly recommend a trip with the whole family.

Bourges

Last but not least– and by far the most visited place out of our five recommendations– is Bourges. This gorgeous medieval city is famous for its old town with stunning mansions and half-timbered houses. Less than two kilometres from the centre of Bourges is the Val d’Auron lake, a vast man-made space used for fishing, canoeing and sailing. There is even a lifeguard service during the summer months.

Some top places to visit recommended by Tripadvisor are the Cathedrale De Bourges, a cathedral which is dedicated to Saint Stephen; the Palais Jacques-Couer, a top sight to see in Bourges and one of the finest flamboyant Gothic civilian building in France; and Le Jardin de L’Archeveche, which displays beautiful gardens and gorgeous flowers. There are a lot of child friendly places to see which is great for the whole family touring in a campervan. There are also many pitches for campervans in this area, so wherever you choose to go around Bourges there will be many things to do.
