wine tours and accommodation between Bordeaux and Bergerac
Over a decade ago Sean and Caro Feely left city jobs to dive into the world of wine and tourism with big dreams and a tiny budget. The 14 hectare vineyard and historic farmstead they bought was in liquidation and the nail-biting adventure that ensued was published in Caro’s book ‘Grape Expectations’.
The story improved and Chateau Feely, located just over an hour east of Bordeaux and 20 minutes west of Bergerac airport, is now an icon for organic, biodynamic and natural wine and wine tourism. The story of their adventures of French life including winning awards for their organic wines, a certified WSET wine school, gold trophies for wine tourism and the development of their ecological luxury accommodation continues in book two ‘Saving our Skins’ and book three ‘Glass Half Full’.
It is a story of following your dreams and of tenacity – sticking to your beliefs. ‘When we bought the farm only 1% of French vineyards were organic, today it is over 10%,’ says Caro. ‘Luckily we were stubborn and went against the experts at the time. Today those same experts are singing the praises of organic and trying to convert more farmers. There is a growing realisation of why this choice is so important for us, our visitors, guests and clients and our neighbours and wider community.’
When you visit for a wine tour or wine course or stay in the accommodation at Chateau Feely you experience a working organic wine farm and passion for wine. Chateau Feely offers fun activities including day tours like play winemaker for a day, short visits like the taster tour, gourmet wine and food pairings and family friendly tours like the walk and cheese platter. For more serious wine lovers wanting to further their wine education, this organic and biodynamic vineyard hosts a certified WSET wine school and offers wine courses online too.
Chateau Feely won the Best of Wine Tourism Gold trophy for the greater Bordeaux region in 2013 for their tours and in 2017 for their accommodation. ‘We were totally immersed. C’était magnifique.’ Michael from Australia about Chateau Feely 5 day walking tour.
The Wine Lodge (sleeps 4 and certified handicap accessible) and The Wine Cottage (sleeps 2) is available as self catering weekly rental all year round (Saturday to Saturday) and also as chambre d’hote (B&B – min 2 nights) October to end May. ‘Wonderful place! Wish we had longer here,’ Caroline from UK about Chateau Feely Wine Lodge.
The accommodation and visits are rated for their facilities including a 12m*4m salt water pool and the stunning views, but also for the welcome. Caro and Sean and their chateau Feely team love sharing their passion for wine and ecology with guests and it shows. Chateau Feely organic and biodynamic vineyard is in Saussignac in the Dordogne, one hour from Bordeaux city and 20 minutes from Bergerac. Saussignac village is an easy 10 minute
walk away and offers a traditional french restaurant and a hip cafe. Saussignac is also certified ‘bio engagé’. This means among other things, that the village doesn’t use pesticides in the management of their public spaces. More than 20% of the agricultural land in Saussignac commune is organic.
Chateau Feely was elected as one of the top five wine tour destinations in the world by Cara magazine. They won the ‘best of challenge’ for wine tourism in Bergerac for their accommodation in 2016 and for their wine and food events in 2017.
Star wines include no sulfite added reds like Feely ‘Grâce’ (barrel aged merlot cabernet sauvignon blend) and ‘Résonance’ (merlot) and whites Feely ‘Sincérité’ (sauvignon blanc) and ‘Générosité’ (barrel aged sémillon). The vineyard certified organic (Ecocert) and biodynamic (Demeter) is on a unique plateau of limestone, flintstone and clay. Feely wines are limited quantity and vineyard specific including some very old vines planted in 1945.
