Nestled in the rolling countryside near to the Dordogne river, Château Carbonneau and its surrounding vineyard and farm is a perfect holiday retreat ideally located between the vineyards of Bordeaux, Medoc and Saint Emilion (to the west) and those of Bergerac (to the east. The present French/New Zealand owners, Wilfrid and Jacquie Franc de Ferrière and their four children, Hugo, Pierre, Margot and Lucie inherited the property in 1992. At the time, the chateau’s former glory was difficult to imagine and the vineyard had diminished to a mere 2 hectares of aging vines. Not one to be put off by quite such a challenge, Jacquie set about restoring the interior of the chateau and grounds while Wilfrid undertook to replant the whole vineyard and begin making wine once more on the property.

25 years later, Chateau Carbonneau boasts 23 hectares of vineyard under the Sainte Foy Côtes de Bordeaux appellation and an award winning bed and breakfast.  We produce red, rosé, white and sparkling wine and guests can enjoy tastings and visits of the wine and the winery.

The chateau offers five spacious and elegant guest rooms with a clever blend of French family antiques and fresh country charm. Each room has its own ensuite and most boast breathtaking views over the vines and fields. Two hectares of park and garden – including the walled English style garden with a large variety of roses and irises surround the chateau offer absolute tranquility. In the former ‘potager’ we also grow herbs and vegetables used to garnish our platters. The hundred year old trees in the park are an ideal shelter from the hot sun as is the large swimming pool – just the place to enjoy a glass of wine and a good book – ‘la vie du château’ !

Breakfast is served in the dining room and on the large south-facing terrace and is a continental buffet style – tea, coffee, croissants, fresh bread, muffins, cereal, fresh and dry fruit, cheese, eggs, homemade yoghurts – everything needed to start the day the best way possible ! Free wifi is available throughout the house and we do cater for young children.

A recent addition to the property, The Glass House wine bar welcomes guests and visitors  most days of the week from lunchtime until evening. You can choose from a country style, vegetarian, cheese-lover or gourmet duck platter accompanied of course by a glass of Chateau Carbonneau. The Glass House is also a ‘salon de thé ‘ and Jacquie’s cakes, scones and biscuits have quite a following even amongst the French ! We also serve an extensive selection of tea from the Palais des Thés, coffee and why not a glass of chilled bubbles – perfect with a slice of cake.

Access to Carbonneau is easy from either Bordeaux or Bergerac airports and we would advise renting a car to fully appreciate all the little towns and villages in the area.
