Getting celebrities to endorse a product is one thing; giving them a hand in the actual design process could prove to be a downright disaster. A legendary screen icon, however, has just shown she has the right stuff, playing a real role in creating a new It bag. Isabella Rossellini’s stunning new handbag collection for the Italian jeweler Bulgari finds the actress combining her innate elegance with creative flair and luxury materials such as pony skin, chevron canvas and carved patent leather. Rossellini’s rectangular totes, all handmade in Bulgari’s Italian workshop, feature striking Art Deco-inspired clasps decorated with semiprecious stones and include a quirky personal touch on the lining: a snail motif sketched by Isabella herself which is both a nod to her environmental films and an admission that she carries everything with her everywhere, using her handbag as a “home away from home”. The handbags retail for $1,700 to $2,600.
