New in Paris: The Eiffel Tower’s Glass Floor

On Monday, October 6 Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo inaugurated the newly renovated premier étage of the Eiffel Tower. Suspended 57 metres above the ground, the first floor used to be overlooked by tourists, but that’s about to change… big-time. In a matter of days, the new glass floor has already become the place for visitors to take selfies (and strike outrageous poses!). Though walking across the transparent floor is not for the faint of heart.

The 30 million euro renovation project also included new pavilions and a museum. Four solar panels were installed, which provide half of the tower’s hot water needs. In a statement, Hidalgo declared, “I’ve heard that Paris has lost her luster and attractiveness, but that’s not true. We are an attractive city capable of innovation and reinvention without damaging our history.”
