Fall in Brittany: Baroque Music at the Lanvellec Festival

Mark your calendar for a sensational autumn soirée! Celebrating its 29th birthday this year, the Lanvellec Festival brings to life a brilliant epoch in music, inviting music lovers to the most important royal courts in Europe- from Versailles to Dresden, from London to Venice. The scores of brilliant composers (like Vivaldi, Zelenka, Dowland, Purcell, Delalande, Destouches, and Gabrieli) are interpreted by a stellar line-up of internationally renowned classical musicians.

Officially called the Festival de musique ancienne de Lanvellec et du Trégor, the two-week musical event is anchored around the last authentic organ of English Robert Dallam (1653).

The fall is a fabulous time to visit Brittany- when the summer crowds have long dissipated yet the cold winter temperatures are held at bay. The gorgeous coastline of the Côtes-d’Armor will be yours for the gawking!

The Festival consists of nine exceptional concerts over three weekends. From Friday, October 9-Sunday, October 11: The Ensemble Il Festino, Manuel de Grange and Dagmar Saskova (Prat) invite you to the courts of Louis XIV. Iestyn Davies, counter-tenor and Elisabeth Kenny, lute and theorbo (Trégastel), make sublime the music of Purcell, Dowland and Handel. The Ensemble Gli Incogniti, Amandine Beyer and Giuliano Carmignola (Lannion) shine in double concertos of Vivaldi, master of the violin.

From Friday, October 16- Sunday October, 18, the Ensemble Les Surprises and Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas (Lannion) will perform the opera-ballet “The Elements” (by Lalande-Destouches). Yasuko and Michel Bouvard, on the organ of Robert Dallam (1653) (Lanvellec) for a European trek à 4 mains. The Ensemble Le Banquet Céleste and Damien Guillon reveal the intensity of the Lamentations de Jérémie, put to music by Zelenka (Tréguier).

From Friday, October 23-Sunday, October 25, The Ensemble Les Cyclopes, Bibiane Lapointe and Thierry Maeder, (Guingamp) unveil the fruits of their research on the “mysterious” Froberger. The Ensemble Concerto Soave and Jean-Marc Aymes (Plouaret) recreate the world premiere of the oratorio Perti, “La Lingua profetica del taumaturgo di Paola, San Francesco”. The Ensemble La Fenice and Jean Tubéry ( Lanvellec ) brings to life the splendour of a celebration at the time of the Doges.

Access to the festival is by train (take the Plouaret-Trégor TGV Atlantique and change at Guingamp or St-Brieuc ); plane (Lannion airport or the Aéroport de Brest-Bretagne), or by car (Rennes-Brest route RN12).
