French Film Reviews: Up for Love, Starring Jean Dujardin

Artist star Jean Dujardin owns one of the smarmiest grins in French cinema, and his character in this mainstream rom-com uses it to full effect. He plays Alexandre, a wealthy and successful man of limited stature (digitally completed in post-production) out to woo a lawyer (Virginie Efira) that he meets on the phone.

When they meet, she must overcome her initial surprise and disappointment at his undersized credentials, then the subsequent social judgements coming her way as the pair step out. A nagging question in our mind, though: if tolerance and acceptance are the messages, why did producers not just pick a small lead actor?

Up for Love
