Marcel By, a new contemporary furniture manufacture with a new Haut Marais gallery, announces its philosophy right up front. Marcel instantly evokes a typical French character of appealing simplicity. By, in English, represents the know-how of the people involved. The founders are designer, interior architect and scenographer Stephan Lanez and HEC-trained investment entrepreneur Jean-Jacques Lejal. The design team is a dream slate of young talent: Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Jakob + MacFarlane, Samuel Accoceberry, and Lanez himself. Realized by top craftsmen, from cabinetmakers, glassblowers and tapestry weavers to concrete specialists, their innovative first collection mixes natural materials—solid hardwoods, metal, glass, ceramics, leather and wool—with high-tech LEDs, resin, composite concrete and flexible thermoplastics. Standouts are Jakob + MacFarlane’s solid pine Rain bookshelves, a multifaceted stainless steel mirror by Accoceberry, and seating by Duchaufour-Lawrance and Lanez, along with Lanez’s tilted, handblown-glass and solid wood Ciconia standing lamp and his clever Quatro coffee table that separates into four small tables and also provides storage space.
