The Obamas Go to France

American First Lady Michelle Obama flew to France for the weekend, accompanied by her two daughters, Malia and Sasha. On Friday, while President Obama spoke at Buchenwald in Germany alongside Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel, she and the girls explored Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

The Obamas were in France to commemorate the 65^th anniversary of D-Day, and on Saturday, they were greeted in Caen, Normandy by President Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. The two heads of state took part in a ceremony to honor the fallen Allied soldiers, including nearly 1,500 Americans, at the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. In a speech at the ceremony, President Obama held forth on the lessons of June 6, 1944.  “What we cannot forget—what we must not forget—is that D-Day was a time and a place where the bravery and selflessness of a few was able to change the course of an entire century,” he said.

Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy, who have become dueling style icons, did not disappoint sartorially. The French first lady was dressed in head-to-toe Dior, while Mrs. Obama, in what one can only assume was a nod to French-American cooperation, wore a coat by American designer Michael Kors, a dress by American Narciso Rodriguez, and a trademark belt by the French fashion house Givenchy.
