Sonia Celebrates

In 2008, designer Sonia Rykiel celebrated the 40th anniversary of her fashion label, launched in a small boutique in Saint Germain des Prés in 1968. Honoring the occasion, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is presenting Sonia Rykiel, Exhibition, a big retrospective of some 200 garments, including the early knitwear with inside-out seams that made her famous and the simple sweaters with poetic inscriptions that became one of her trademarks, along with her signature stripes, multiple layers of black, and elegant evening froufrous in floating chiffon. Set in the décor of a sumptuous Parisian apartment, the show also presents a sumptuous series of rarely shown portraits by photographer Sarah Moon, and photos of the Rykiel oeuvre by Dominique Isserman. The show’s catalogue is a record of Rykiel’s four decades of fashion, with some 6,500 photos.
