Open-Air Opera in Paris

Mozart’s final masterpiece opera, La Flûte Enchantée (The Magic Flute), is brought to life in a series of open-air performances in the elegant courtyard of gold-domed Paris landmark the Hôtel National des Invalides. Set to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, this two-act opera tells the story of Tamino, a handsome young prince, and the bird-catcher Papageno, who embark on a mission à deux, to rescue Pamina, the beautiful daughter of the Queen of the Night, who’s been kidnapped by the evil sorcerer Sarastro. A magic flute and bells protect the two heroes on their journey as they enter a mystical world.

It’s a story about the search for wisdom, of triumph over evil and ultimately, of finding love. Opéra en Plein Air shows draw in excess of 40,000 spectators every summer, performed at some of France’s most magnificent locations, such as the Château de Fontainebleau, the Domaine de Sceaux and the Château de Vincennes. This version of Mozart’s classic will no doubt seduce both new fans and long-time lovers of opera for a magical evening beneath the stars.
