Liza Minnelli: An American in Paris

Liza Minnelli is coming to Paris. The American diva, daughter of the legendary Judy Garland and a star made famous in her own right by her Oscar-winning performance in Cabaret, takes the stage this Saturday evening at the Palais de Congrès for what is sure to be a memorable evening.

In an interview with Agence France-Presse, Ms. Minnelli explained her fond feelings for the City of Light.

“This city reminds me of my father [the film director Vincent Minnelli]: he filmed An American in Paris and Gigi here, and he received the Legion of Honor. He taught me a lot about this wonderful country,” she said. Her show in Paris on Saturday comes at the close of her latest mini-tour of Europe. “It was in Paris that I had my first real success, at the Olympia Theatre. Charles Aznavour introduced me to the audience that first time, and he has done so every time I’ve come back to Paris since.”

Ms. Minnelli counts Mr. Aznavour among her professional heroes, along with fellow French chanteurs Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.

“Our job is to amuse people. Charles is right when he says: ‘Our role is to distract people, to get them out of themselves and transport them to a different place.”
