Guide to beaches near Montpellier and surrounds

The beaches north and south of Montpellier in the Herault and the Gard are amongst the most popular in the region – bordered by atmospheric inland lagoons and boasting acres of golden stand and crystal blue water. Some of these beaches, such as l’Espiguette, Le Grand Travers, Maguelone and Les Aresquiers are incredibly unspoilt, wild and beautiful – perfect for escaping from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Meanwhile the larger resorts of Le Grau-du-Roi and La Grande Motte is where all the action is, with plenty to do and see. There are also a few more town beaches at Frontignan, Carnon-Plage and Palavas-les-Flots which can be a little bit quieter but are also well serviced. Further south is the Thau Lagoon, and here you will find a number of pretty fishing towns and villages and some lovely little beaches such as those at Marseillan-Plage and Meze and also the vast length of sandy beach leading down from Sète which is more resort like at its northern end and more wild further south.
