Sarlat is tourist central in the lush, picturesque and historic part of Périgord Noir. So although there’s no shortage of places to stay, it does get busy and the city centre can be thronged with people soaking up the unique medieval atmosphere. Sometimes it’s nice to leave the crowds behind at the end of the day. So here’s a real find: Le Mas de Castel, a peaceful, calm and comfortable spot just a short drive from the city centre, and one that won’t break the bank either.
This is a 3 star “Hôtel de Charme” and it is run with courtesy, warmth and charm. There are 20 rooms– some in the original building with more modern rooms in the new wing. These were nicely fitted with good quality showers, air conditioning that actually works, electric shutters, very comfortable beds and each room with a small terrace overlooking the gardens.
There’s a light and spacious breakfast area also overlooking the gardens but no restaurant. But that’s not a problem as you are a taxi ride away from Sarlat.
Another bonus is the heated pool, which although not Olympic size, is a pleasant surprise if you happen to be staying out of peak season, because it’s warm enough for a dip. This is in marked contrast to many other hotels, even luxury hotels, which don’t have pool heating and only the bravest venture in before mid-June.
