The Pompidou Center periodically rearranges its permanent collection, and the newest presentation devotes some three-quarters of the available space to works by women in all disciplines of the 20th-and 21st-century art: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, design, cinema, architecture—some 500 works by 200 artists including Valérie Belin, Sophie Calle, Helen Frankenthaler, Gisèle Freund, Zaha Hadid, Marie Laurencin, Joan Mitchell, Germaine Richier, Dorothea Tanning and Suzanna Valadon.

Aix-en-Provence Summer Festival

One of the most important lyric festivals in Europe, this year Aix completes a four-year production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle with Götterdämmerung, with Simon Rattle conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker, Ben Heppner as Siegfried and Anne Sofie Von Otter as Waltraute. There’s also a Mozart double feature—Idomeneo, conducted by Marc Minkowski, with Yann Beuron and Mireille Delunsch; and The Magic Flute, conducted by René Jacobs—and Offenbach’s comic opera Orphée Aux Enfers with upcoming young singers from the Festival’s European Academy of Music.

Tarzan Hits Paris

Tarzan swings out of the African jungle and into the Musée du Quai Branly this month. Focusing on the exotic images and mythology behind the King of the Apes and his mate Jane, the new exhibit examines how popular culture looks at Africa, drawing on a range of influences, from the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago to Darwin's theory of evolution. Featuring photographs, books, original plates from comic books, and even a special stand where visitors can try to win a trip to Africa by imitating Tarzan's famous jungle cry. .

Le Bain et Le Miroir (Part I)

Subtitled Body Care and Cosmetics from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, an exhibit in honor of the newly restored frigidarium in the ruins of ancient Roman baths beneath the Cluny Museum, with paintings, sculpture, tapestries and such necessities as perfume bottles, combs, mirrors, and jars for makeup, lotions and creams. A parallel show is at the Musée de la Renaissance-Château d'Ecouen.

Alexander Calder: Les Années Parisiennes 1926-1933

Zooming in on Calder's early years in Paris, when the American artist-engineer evolved from painter and illustrator into a sculptor "drawing in space". The show includes his "portraits" in twisted wire and the superb sculpture group The Circus, presented in France for the first time since Calder's death in 1976.

Kandinsky

Picasso Cézanne

The big show of the summer in the south of France, held in Cézanne's home town, focusing on his lifelong influence on Picasso, from the young Spanish artist's arrival in Paris in 1900 to his final years living "chez Cézanne" at the foot of the Montagne Sainte Victoire. Picasso is buried at his home there, the Chateau de Vauvenargaues, which will be exceptionally open to the public during the show. Picasso's later work did not compare well with other older masters in a recent Paris exhibit, so this show, with more than 100 paintings, drawings, watercolors, sculptures and graphic works, is awaited with much interest.

Jacques Tati

An exhibit dedicated to the beloved French movie comedian whose films observed 20th-century modernity with an astonished eye—photos, film clips, set decorations, furnishings, sculpture and other wacky modern contraptions from his delightful Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Mon Oncle, Play Time and others, all of which will be screened in rotation during the exhibit.
