Philippe Roucou

Inside the Philippe Roucou boutique

Philippe Roucou

September 30, 2011

Philippe Roucou’s minimalist boutique on the trendy rue de Charonne, not far from the Bastille, is one of those rare finds that makes a girl’s heart sing, offering some of the most delectable handbags in Paris. Roucou, who’s been designing high-end bags since the early 1990s, has a spot-on aesthetic that combines style, innovation and just the right amount of sex appeal. His seasonal collections are cut from rare, handpicked skins and range from jewel-like evening bags to sturdy python satchels. This year’s spring/summer offering includes a superb raffia tote with handles and side insets in soft black calfskin that is elegance incarnate. The Isadorable, a tiny black evening bag, bristles with what look like tiny spent bullet casings—sort of like a gilded porcupine. Vintage-inspired bags in supple python or velvety scale-pressed leather sport long, serpentine chain straps and go easily from day to night. Although neutral colors—ivory, black and taupe—usually dominate, Roucou always includes a few daring hues, like citron and fuchsia, that are surprisingly versatile. The boutique also carries beautiful wallets, men’s leather goods and Roucou’s exceptional Polaroid-printed silk scarves.
