Winter Sales Season

Soldes means Sales—for five wonderful weeks

Winter Sales Season

February 3, 2011

France's winter sale season officially started on Wednesday, January 12. Unlike in the US, the dates of twice-yearly sales are regulated by the French government—they usually start in early January and late June, and last about five weeks. This winter it's January 12–February 15, and it's prime time for bargain-hunting.

Department stores, including Printemps and the Galeries Lafayette, as well as many smaller shops, will be celebrating the sales season with extended hours, and don't be surprised to see shoppers lining up outside their doors before opening time. Shop early for the best selection, but be aware that prices continue to drop on the dwindling sales stock during those five weeks.
