Fashion: Fantasy Couture

April 14, 2010

All photographs by Guy Marineau

Flounces, frills and frou-frou, silver, shimmer and transparent sheen, glitter, glamour and moon glow: the Paris Spring/Summer 2010 haute couture collections are all about spring flights of fancy and midsummer night dreams, at times as delirious as anything Alice found in Wonderland. Jean-Paul Gaultier took off for faraway places, with feathers, exotic flowers, vivid colors and palm fronds everywhere. Chanel offered a Mozartian world of innocence in white ruffles and frothy lace, and white wigs upswept into huge heart-shaped chignons. Hair was even bigger and bolder at Dior, where the clock turned back to Belle Epoque cavalières in long-skirted riding habits and veiled top hats, and afternoon frocks were matched with enormous picture hats swathed in tulle. Valentino painted blue or violet bands across the eyes of his models, shades of Avatar. And the theme at Armani Privé was a sliver of crescent moonshine, with everything cut on the curve, from a few tailored suits to strapless ball gowns, handbags and crystal crescent jewelry.
